Keo Pagoda, Duy Nhat commune, Vu Thu district, Thai Binh province (old)

Keo Pagoda Festival - Thai Binh Keo Pagoda is located in Duy Nhat commune, Vu Thu district, Thai Binh province. Each year the temple organizes two festival seasons. The Spring Festival is opened on the 4th day of the 1st month of the lunar calendar. The autumn festival is held on the 13th, 14th and 15th days of the 9th lunar month and is the main festival. The autumn festival aims to commemorate and honor Zen Master Khong Lo - the founder of the pagoda and very good at Buddhism. He was instrumental in curing King Ly's illness and was appointed national monk. The rituals during the 3-day autumn festival in September of Keo Pagoda are both agricultural and entertainment festivals, as well as a historical festival associated with the life of Zen Master Khong Lo. Within the framework of the festival, there are many rituals to show respect and remember the merits of the gods and ancestors of the village and commune. Through those rituals, the villagers pray to the gods to bless them and protect them for good harvests, a happy and prosperous life, and good fortune. At the end of the Keo pagoda festival, there is also an adoration ceremony, a special ritual only found at the Keo pagoda festival. The adoration dance is an ancient dance represented by the shallow rowing dance and the frog dance. Besides the rituals, there are exciting festivals: swimming competitions, boat processions, duck catching games, love song competitions, tug of war,... creating a bustling atmosphere that attracts a large number of onlookers. Tourists who make a pilgrimage to Keo Pagoda, in addition to worshiping Buddha and saints, can also admire a unique architectural work with a history of nearly 400 years that today very few ancient cultural works still retain.
