Abundant Forest Resources
U Minh Ha National Park spans an impressive 8,527.8 hectares, covering four communes across the districts of Tran Van Thoi and U Minh in Ca Mau province. Conveniently situated in the western part of the province, it's just about 25km from Ca Mau city, meaning a scenic drive of a little over 30 minutes will bring you to the heart of U Minh Ha National Park.

Here, the people of Ca Mau are diligently preserving a unique and pristine freshwater ecosystem. A highlight is the melaleuca forest ecosystem, which thrives in conditions of constant flooding and alum-rich soil. Beneath the ground lies a layer of peat, formed over hundreds of years from ancient vegetation, topped by the naturally growing melaleuca trees. The melaleuca tree is truly iconic to the Mekong Delta region, and U Minh Ha Forest serves as a vital 'green lung' for the area. On May 26, 2009, UNESCO recognized U Minh Ha National Park as one of the three core zones of the Ca Mau Cape World Biosphere Reserve.
U Minh Ha boasts an incredibly rich and diverse ecosystem, where a multitude of plant and animal species coexist in harmony. You'll find nearly 250 plant species, 182 bird species, 20 reptile and amphibian species, 40 mammal species, and countless insect species. Notably, many of these are critically important and listed in the Red Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Today, U Minh Ha forest and its surrounding buffer zone serve as a bountiful source of diverse freshwater fish, including snakehead fish (cá lóc), flower fish (cá bông), featherback fish (cá thác lác), yellow catfish (cá trê vàng), and butterflyfish (sắt bướm), supplying consumers far and wide. Each year, approximately 60,000 tons of these freshwater fish are provided to markets both within and beyond the province.

What's truly exciting is the recent reappearance of many wild animal species in the U Minh Ha melaleuca forest. Particularly noteworthy are the increasing numbers of deer and wild boars – creatures once thought to have 'vanished' after years of conflict and human hunting.
Experience Life as a 'U Minh Local'
A trip to U Minh Ha Forest promises truly exciting experiences, thanks to its unique and wild beauty that you won't find anywhere else. Imagine nothing more delightful than gliding serenely on traditional 'xuồng' (small boats) or 'võ lãi' (motorized boats) along the winding canals, venturing deep into the heart of the forest.

The deeper you venture, the more you'll truly grasp the untamed beauty of U Minh Ha. You'll marvel at the incredibly diverse and abundant wildlife and plant life. You'll also be captivated by the legendary tales of Bac Ba Phi, stories intrinsically linked to the lives of Ca Mau people since their ancestors first pioneered the southern lands: cloud cobras slithering on melaleuca treetops, turtles pushing boats, deer devouring tongues, and snakehead fish nibbling on dried coconuts… these are just a few of the fascinating anecdotes you might hear.
Visitors can rent a traditional 'xuồng' (small boat) and navigate to a prime spot within the forest to enjoy some fishing – whether it's angling, setting lines, laying traps, or even casting your own nets. Fish are incredibly plentiful here, so you'll have no trouble filling your basket after a successful outing. If luck is on your side, you might even reel in impressive snakehead fish (cá lóc) or 'cá dầy' weighing anywhere from 1kg, sometimes even up to a remarkable 2-3kg! For a more adventurous dive into local life, join the residents in the forest to harvest wild honey, set traps for eels, or lay fish traps. You can also forage for wild edible shoots like 'đọt choại', 'bồn bồn', lotus (sen), water lily (súng), and 'đọt cóc kèn' – perfect ingredients for preparing delightful local snacks.
Visitors can also accompany experienced 'gác kèo' honey collectors deep into the forest to witness their craft. It's a truly thrilling and fascinating experience, and you'll even get to savor freshly harvested young honeycomb, dipped in a bit of golden, viscous honey – a unique and delicious treat!

After your journey through the forest, prepare to indulge in the culinary delights of U Minh Ha's specialties. You can savor fresh catches like freshwater snakehead fish (cá lóc đồng), freshwater catfish (cá trê đồng), 'cá dầy' (a local fish), perch (cá rô), eels, even turtle and snake dishes… And, of course, no visit is complete without trying the renowned U Minh fermented fish hotpot (lẩu mắm), a true local favorite.
Even the most discerning foodies will forever remember many other distinctive dishes: the richly rustic eel stewed with noni leaves (lươn um lá nhàu), snake (rắn hổ hành) cooked with green bean porridge in the unique Ca Mau style, snakehead fish (cá lóc) grilled whole with straw (nướng trui), charcoal-grilled snake with water lily (rắn bông súng nướng than) served with crushed rock salt and fiery green chilies, freshwater perch (cá rô đồng) prepared in a flavorful fermented fish hotpot (lẩu mắm), and even crispy fried field mouse (chuột đồng chiên)….
With such tantalizing 'bait' (food), you absolutely must pair it with the robust flavor of U Minh Ha's 'forest wine' – the unique giac fruit wine (rượu trái giác). This combination will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the wild, rustic, yet wonderfully simple flavors of this 'Southern Forest Land'.
