Uncovering Northern Vietnam's 'Little Switzerland': A Beautiful Grassland Retreat Less Than 400km from Hanoi

Spanning hundreds of hectares, this sprawling, verdant grassland isn't tucked away in some far-flung European country. Oh no, it's right here in northern Vietnam!
Spanning hundreds of hectares, this lush green meadow isn't in some distant European country, but right here in northern Vietnam.
When vast, endless green grasslands stretching to the horizon come to mind, most travelers immediately think of faraway European countries. However, every September, as autumn arrives, images of a particular meadow begin to appear on travel forums and groups, garnering significant attention. The important thing is, it's not in Europe, but right here in northern Vietnam.
Anyone who sees photos of this meadow is sure to be amazed by its beauty, hardly believing that such a stunning, world-class destination exists right here in Vietnam. Especially when the buckwheat flowers are in full bloom, the scenery here becomes even more enchanting and magical.
The destination we're talking about is Suôi Thầu meadow, Ha Giang, affectionately nicknamed "Switzerland in the heart of Ha Giang" by many travelers.

Images of Suôi Thầu meadow have appeared on social media, with many people finding it hard to believe they are from northern Vietnam.
The meadow is precisely located in Nàn Ma commune, connecting Xín Mần district (Ha Giang) and Bắc Hà district (Lao Cai). Compared to many other tourist attractions in Ha Giang and the northern mountainous region, Suôi Thầu meadow remains relatively unknown, unfamiliar, and new to most travelers.
However, with its surreal natural beauty, this place holds immense tourism development potential, promising to become a must-visit destination in Ha Giang, especially during buckwheat flower season.
Getting to Suôi Thầu Meadow
To reach Suôi Thầu meadow from Hanoi, travelers will need to break their journey into two stages. This is because Xín Mần district in Ha Giang, where the meadow is located, is considered the most challenging district in terms of transportation infrastructure and connectivity compared to other districts. While there are roads leading to the district, they don't fully meet the needs of passenger transport vehicles.
For the first leg from Hanoi to Ha Giang, travelers can choose from various modes of transport, including motorbikes, cars, or sleeper buses. This route is quite familiar to many travel enthusiasts.
The most suitable place in Ha Giang to stop and transfer to Suôi Thầu is Cốc Pài town, the center of Xín Mần district. From here, travelers will begin the second leg of their journey. Although this section is only about 6km long, it's a small, bumpy, and winding mountain pass. The most suitable mode of transport for this second leg is a motorbike.

The road from Ha Giang to Suôi Thầu meadow is considered challenging to navigate.
The total travel time to reach the meadow will be longer than to other popular destinations in Ha Giang, taking nearly 7 hours. However, upon arrival, all the effort travelers put into the long journey and challenging road will be richly rewarded by the magnificent scenery of the vast meadow. Traveler Trần Mai Phương Mai from Hanoi shared in a travel group: "The journey to Suôi Thầu - Xín Mần meadow was incredibly arduous. But once there, it was truly worth every bit of effort."
A Beauty Worthy of the Name "Switzerland in the Heart of Ha Giang"
According to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, Suôi Thầu meadow spans hundreds of hectares at an altitude of 1,200m above sea level. Approximately 60 households, mostly from the Hmong ethnic group, live around the meadow. From Suôi Thầu, visitors can gaze out at the communes of Pà Vầy Sủ, Chí Cà, Thèn Phàng, Cốc Rế, or Cốc Pài town, which is 6km away.
What truly captivates visitors here is the wild, majestic natural landscape, coupled with the pristine, dust-free air that bustling cities simply cannot offer.
Each season, the meadow dons a different attire. In summer, Suôi Thầu is covered in a vibrant green, stretching to the horizon. In autumn, particularly from mid-September to November each year, when large numbers of buckwheat flowers bloom, a significant portion of the meadow transforms into a romantic canvas of pink and white.

At other times of the year, splashes of brown and yellow appear from rice and corn fields, or from the wild shrubs growing along the fields, or the rivers and small streams at the foot of the mountains. All these colors blend together, making Suôi Thầu meadow appear in photos and drone footage as a perfect masterpiece, painted by Mother Nature herself.
Many travelers who haven't visited Suôi Thầu, after seeing photos of its blue skies, white clouds, and stunning meadow, comment that the scenery "doesn't look real" or "it surely won't be like that in real life." However, those who have experienced it firsthand confirm that "the scenery of Suôi Thầu in real life is exactly as it appears in photos."
Traveler Thương Thương from Hanoi, who recently visited Suôi Thầu during the September 2nd holiday, shared:"The scenery here is truly beautiful. The photos I uploaded to Facebook didn't even need any editing or added effects.". Some travelers even say that while Suôi Thầu looks beautiful in photos, it's even more stunning in person:"It looks beautiful in photos, but it's many times more beautiful in reality.", added traveler Loan Trần.

Beyond simple sightseeing, many travelers now choose to camp on the meadow. Essential items like tents, chairs, food, and water should be prepared by visitors themselves, as the surrounding area is pristine and doesn't offer many services. Occasionally, travelers might encounter local residents or children playing, or participating in farming and production activities on the meadow.
Some households near the meadow have also proactively capitalized on tourist interest to generate income. For instance, Mr. Giàng Seo Trang's family is one of those involved in growing buckwheat flowers on the meadow and setting up shelters for visitors to take photos. He mentioned that each photo session costs 20,000 VND, which helps his family earn an additional income daily.

Many travelers choose to camp in the middle of the meadow.
Suôi Thầu meadow remains a natural tourist destination with minimal human intervention. According to Phạm Duy Hiền, Chairman of the Xín Mần District People's Committee (Ha Giang), both the province and district are committed to preserving the meadow's landscape, as there are not many areas like it left today.
The district's strategy is to avoid impacting the core area, focusing instead on developing services in the outer sections. Furthermore, future tourism development will lean towards experiential tourism, with no motorized vehicles allowed inside. Instead, local residents will provide shuttle services using rudimentary vehicles. The goal is to both preserve the natural landscape and create jobs for the local community.
Beyond the highlight of Suôi Thầu meadow, Xín Mần district boasts several other unique tourist attractions, such as Nấm Dẩn Ancient Stone Field, Tiên Đèo Gió Waterfall, and Quảng Nguyên Mineral Spring. Visitors can combine multiple destinations here for the most complete travel experience.
